Covid-19 Rapid Antigen Tests: A Case of Moral Dilemma

Thanks to innovation, some developed countries are now able to do the Covid-19 test at home. The Covid-19 rapid antigen test was authorized by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2020 [1]. According to the FDA's website, there is more than 225 diagnostic test for Covid-19 [1]. While some of these rapid antigen tests require prescriptions, others do not. The Ellume test is the first over-the-counter test that can be used at home without prescription [1]. It is a good thing there are various options and requirements because some health insurance companies might not cover it in their plans. This rapid antigen test works by detecting the virus in people infected with Covid-19 or who are asymptomatic. Even though these tests can experience false-negative and false-positive results, they are more than 90% accurate at detecting the virus. The good news is that results are ready in a matter of minutes.

These rapid antigen test kits contain a sterile swab, a sample vial, a test unit, batteries, a plastic disposable bag, and instructions on how to use it [1]. Personally, the rapid antigen test is a great tool to have. This diagnostic test gives room for more testing to be done, reduces crowds in hospitals, no queues, accessible but not all are affordable. I am curious as to when these rapid antigen tests will be available in low-income countries especially in Africa. We need more of these antigen tests to be very affordable worldwide. I like the idea of being able to carry out your test in the comfort of your own home. Also, individuals from two years old and above can use this test [1].

However, I have serious concerns about how truthful people are. If their test comes out positive, will they notify their healthcare providers? Will they be honest about their results and self-quarantine themselves? That is the million-dollar question. A lot of people might end up not being honest because of fear of stigmatization. The Covid-19 rapid antigen test kits are doable. It is just a case of moral dilemma that worries me.
