To ensure health for all and that no one is left behind, the Cameroonian government implemented phase 1 of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC)/CSU. Registration is currently ongoing nationwide in Cameroon. UHC/CSU gives everyone and anyone access to the quality health services they need whenever and wherever they need them, without any financial burdens. The health services covered are preventive, health promotion, treatments, rehabilitation, and palliative care [1].
As long as you live in Cameroon, you can register or enroll for UHC/CSU Phase 1. And please note that registration is free of charge. Do not let anyone deceive you. To register, you will need one of the following documents: a national ID card, birth certificate, residence permit, passport, driving license, refugee card, and indigence card [1]. I repeat you need just one of the documents listed to register.
You can register yourself online, either using your phone by downloading the Cameroon Health Coverage app for those of you with smartphones or on the website at csu.minsante.cm [1]. Look at the image posted with clear instructions on how to register. It is easy and straightforward. Have a picture handy on your phone because you will upload one for your card. Also, for those without smartphones or online access, will there be any enrollment posts or mobile stations with enrolling agents in various regions to assist? I do not know and am not yet sure if any announcements have been made.
If you succeed in registering, hold on to your receipts and store them well. Please understand that this part is vital. You will receive your UHC/CSU card when you present your receipt to the delivery person [1]. It ensures that the UHC/CSU card gets to the right person. Once you receive your UHC/CSU card and pay your social contributions, if applicable, you get to enjoy the benefits of the UHC system [1].
While the UHC/CSU system is still in the early stages of implementation, we have to give the Cameroonian government some credit. The fact that they have taken bold steps and actions to ensure everyone gets access to quality health services is progress. While most of you, including me, are skeptical about how this UHC/CSU system will be maintained and sustained, I highly recommend and encourage each and every single one of you and your family members to register.
Take advantage of this, and you might be amazed by the reduction in your out-of-pocket payments for medical bills.
